What defined the Victoria Beckham show on Sunday morning was her rather daring new direction in terms of proportions. She kept to her sporty body con codes, in the shape of form-fitting knitwear updated through the use of subtraction and volume.
Her familiar bustier tops got an added bit of sexy ventilation thanks to slits in the fabric that she inserted just below the bosom or across the torso. Her comfy, burrow-yourself-into classic coats were given a touch of youthful charm via oversized buttons and her pointy-toed buckled flat shoes had a quirky retro appeal.
But it was her gutsy move to offer up a series of lean dresses, like the low bubble skirt that expanded out at mid-thigh and finished at the knee that was the stand out silhouette of the show. Offered as it was on slim slip dresses, it made for an interesting update on the classic 90s style. And if Beckham had proposed that shape in monochrome materials she probably could have convinced her devoted followers to give it a try.
Unfortunately, introducing the idea only in graphic checked or striped textural fabrics, she made the already challenging silhouette even more formidable.
But in the end Beckham should be applauded for continuing to push her sartorial envelope, and her customers. After all the only way to really thrive in this business is to take well-calculated risks.
