Freshness was the word of the day at the Missoni tonight. A new show venue, a casting of up-and-coming models and a collection that broadcast a relaxed vibe made for a very winning combination.
Next year, Angela Missoni will have been designing the collection for two decades and that wealth of experience was apparent on the catwalk. Her ability to stay true to the core values of her family company and yet reinvent those constructs each season is the mark of a truly great designer.
This time she was able to do that by elongating her silhouette so that shirtsleeves fell well below the models fingertips, multicolored striped scarves skimmed the ground and knit jackets were built to fit in a slightly oversized manner. Add this to the way she layered together those diverse geometric pieces and the sartorial message was one of youthful exuberance.
Then, there is the inherent girlish charm of wearing a roomy boyfriend sweater sans pants. And let’s be honest, there is a bit of an age limit on wearing a pair of vertical striped wide-cut trousers and gamely matching them with a wide horizontal striped blanket style wrap.
To the lengthened lines Missoni added more fluidity through the construction of her pieces, via trailing embellishments like fringing and also the yarn she used. Her feather-light knit Lurex dresses and slim pants shimmered in the show lights, accenting the models’ every movement.
Missoni once again proved that, in a season when bold colors and geometric shapes are trending, she is still the master of this methodology.
