Designer Jason Wu is really starting to come into his own at Hugo Boss. His latest collection was an elegant and architectural ode to the beauty of the undulating line. It made for a stunningly beautiful endorsement of the minimalistic fashion ideology.
It’s a viewpoint that one celebrity front row guest, Oscar nominee Rooney Mara, understands oh-so-well and another, Kylie Jenner, could learn more about. In the end they both got an education on how to look feminine, sophisticated and modern through deceptively simple designs that were still able to maintain a strong sartorial interest.
Wu did this by taking the curving line of the female form as his starting point. He used undulating seams, swelling panels of free-flowing fabric and rounded asymmetrical silhouettes to bring to life his lineup. This underlining concept was further highlighted by his use of contrasting colored fabrics, the way he paired matte and shine materials and the introduction of a fil coupé velvet flower motif that he judiciously used on segments of his ensembles.
In a collection filled with great ideas, a triptych of dresses right towards the end of the show still stood out for their originality and expert execution. Formed from textural hand-frayed strips of chiffon that had been painstakingly stitched onto a transparent mesh base, the dresses figured the sand of a Zen garden, rippling lines raked though their placid surface. They were modern minimalism at its best.
Mara would be a fool to pass up the opportunity to wear one of Wu’s Hugo Boss designs to the Academy Awards later this month. She certainly would be getting a head start on the many women who will be flocking to the brand for this collection come fall.
