Michael Kors’ stream of consciousness show notes ended with the words « Instaglam…fall 2016 » and that pretty much captured what this collection was all about, clothing that was ready for its social media close-up.
A pair of shimmering silver embroidered tulle pants were begging to be filmed in slow motion. Ditto the feather embellished dresses and the car wash slit skirts. A powder blue mink jacket with an intarsia floral motif, a bouclé coat in mint green with matching fox trim and a crosshatch tweed coat in wisteria purple were just a few of the vibrant colored piece that were perfect for Instagram posts while the metallic brocade dresses and luminescent jacquard pants should be filling up Pinterest boards as I write this.
Backstage before the show Kors posted a photo of runway model and social media star Kendall Jenner in her 60s style short silver dress holding up a handwritten note he had made. It told the models, in his distinctive capitals-only handwriting, to « be strong, powerful and glamorous. Shine like a star ». They certainly did as he asked on the catwalk with eye-catching details like big tiger-eye buttons on a crepe officer’s coat, bags festooned with studs and finished off with chain straps, and the inclusion of round metal fixtures and fittings on dresses. It all helped to make the lineup keep your attention.
This was perhaps not the strongest Kors show in recent memory but it will absolutely leave its mark, both on social media and on the brand’s balance books.
