It was a full court press at Coach where designer Stuart Vevers created a sartorial love letter to all things American on Tuesday afternoon.
He got his guests, including Chloe Grace Moretz, Emma Roberts and Ciara, in the mood by creating a show set that mimicked the look and feel of a high school indoor basketball court. And down it he trotted all of the most iconic emblems of America he could think of.
First and foremost, the classic letterman’s jacket got pride of place in the show. But instead of earning a varsity letter, Vevers’s Coach girls covered their jackets with cute and colorful abstract patches that hinted at indefinable sports teams. In fact, the coats were some of the strongest pieces in the show, along with those all-important Coach bags with their Western embroidery or rivets. Besides the letterman’s jackets there were some fantastic inside out fuzzy shearling jackets, pea coats, perfectos and other shearling outerwear options that came with graphic triangle inserts of snakeskin along the torso.
The kooky trompe-l’oeil short dresses that looked like lumberjack plaid tops paired with short swirling retro patterned skirts were also fun. The introduction of riveting details, like what you might see on a western saddle, on skirts was another cute touch. As were the childlike rocket ship or gold start motif sweaters the designer proffered.
This was a cheerful collection that focused on the sartorial sunny side of the American high school experience and in doing so, came out a winner.
