Sugar and spice and everything nice, that was what Giambattista Valli offered fashion with his latest Giamba collection. A lineup that gave the designer’s own spin on the 80s revival currently inundating Milan Fashion Week.
His take on the era was in the vein of Molly Ringwald circa « Pretty in Pink », meaning quirky girly designs with a dash of punky rebellious attitude. A combo that was just as puckish as back in the day with cute/cool mashups of lace, ruffles and red lip prints.
As this line is slanted to a younger clientele, Gamba ended his babydoll dresses well above the knees and paired rock-and-roll zebra print cardigans with graffiti mini skirts and platform lace-up boots. It’s an aesthetic that you wouldn’t really associate with the designer, who usually slants much more romantic and hyper feminine.
However this new direction suited Valli and the price point of this collection very nicely. Young, fun and a tad daring, the Giamba girl has got the mix just right.
